Why This Matters Now
Zimbabwe is the world's fourth-largest tobacco exporter. Its 130,000 registered smallholder farmers produce over 200 million kilograms of tobacco annually. To cure this tobacco, farmers burn an estimated 330,000 hectares of indigenous woodland every year — an environmental catastrophe that the Zimbabwe government has committed to ending by 2029.
The 2029 mandate will require all tobacco curing to transition away from firewood. Currently, no scalable, compliant alternative exists. Farmers using traditional barns suffer post-harvest losses of 15–25% from thermodynamic inefficiency, mould vulnerability, conditioning failures, and grading deficits. These losses destroy farmer income and degrade the quality of Zimbabwe's tobacco exports.
Everyone Funds the Crop. No One Funds the Cure.
Zimbabwe's contract system provides smallholder farmers with $1,500–$3,000 per hectare for consumable inputs — seed, fertiliser, chemicals. It provides zero investment in curing infrastructure, irrigation, or equipment. To qualify for a contract, farmers must demonstrate "access to own curing facilities" — locking in the use of hand-built brick barns that destroy 40–45% of their crop.
Meanwhile, large-scale commercial farmers receive upwards of $10,000 per hectare in cropping finance and million-dollar loans to construct state-of-the-art curing systems, producing 2–3× more sellable tobacco per hectare at prices 30–50% higher. This is not a productivity gap — it is a structural bias embedded in a system that has not been updated in 25 years. Marillion breaks this cycle by providing professional curing infrastructure at zero cost to the farmer.

Solar + Biogas = Zero Firewood
Marillion Curing Villages deploys centralised, solar-powered curing infrastructure with integrated biogas backup. Each village serves 10 smallholder farmers growing 1 hectare each, with a total curing capacity of 25,000 kg per season. The solar-assisted tunnels provide The solar-thermal system provides the curing heat, backed up by an on-site biogas plant for overcast periods and night-time operation. The biogas plant is fuelled by tobacco stalks — which farmers are legally required to destroy — together with woodlot prunings and crop waste, and it also generates surplus electricity and organic fertiliser.
The result: zero firewood consumption, consistent premium-grade leaf quality, full barcoded traceability from field to export, and carbon credits marketed through the Marillion Diamond Standard.
